Australia: National Disability Strategy 2010-2020

Under Australia’s National Disability Strategy 2010-2020, the Federal, State and Territory Governments committed to a series of policy directions to help ensure ‘people with disability have their rights promoted, upheld and protected’, including:

  • Remove societal barriers preventing people with disability from participating as equal citizens [including within the political and justice systems](Policy Direction 2);
  • People with disability have access to justice (Policy Direction 3);
  • People with disability to be safe from violence, exploitation and neglect(Policy Direction 4); and
  • More effective responses from the criminal justice system to people with disability who have complex needs or heightened vulnerabilities(Policy Direction 5).

Tasmania: Disability Frameworks for Action

Successive Disability Frameworks for Action have been developed in Tasmania to help guide the State Government’s work for all Tasmanians with a disability. The Justice Plan builds on actions commenced under the previous Disability Framework for Action 2013-2017, but it is a specific component of the new Accessible Island: Tasmania’s Disability Framework for Action 2018-2021(Accessible Island), under the ‘Rights Protection, Justice and Legislation’ outcome area.

PDAC is also responsible for the ongoing monitoring of Accessible Island’s Implementation.
