As Premier and Minister for Climate Change, I recognise climate change is an important issue. As we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and rebuild a stronger Tasmania, my Government is committed to taking practical action on climate change.

I am pleased to report on the latest greenhouse gas inventory for Tasmania, which confirms Tasmania’s status as a global leader in mitigating climate change. Tasmania’s net greenhouse gas emissions for 2019 were minus 1.68 megatonnes (Mt) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e), which is a decrease of 108.6 per cent between 1990 and 2019.

Tasmania has an impressive record on climate action. In 2013, we were the first Australian jurisdiction to achieve net zero emissions and we have achieved this commitment consistently since 2015. This accomplishment reflects the carbon sink in our forests and our longstanding investment in renewable energy generation.

Our State is now 100 per cent self-sufficient in renewable energy and continues to lead Australia’s transition to a low emissions economy. This includes a commitment to generate 200 per cent of our current needs from renewable energy by 2040 and fast-tracking a renewable hydrogen industry in Tasmania.

To further reduce our emissions, my Government is supporting the electrification of transport. We have committed to:

  • a two-year Stamp Duty waiver for the purchase of new and second-hand electric vehicles;
  • delivering a further $600,000 in grants to grow our statewide electric vehicle charging network in our regions and at key tourism destinations; and
  • waiving registration fees for electric vehicles purchased by car rental companies and coach operators for two years.

My Government also recognises the opportunity provided by carbon farming to reduce Tasmania’s emissions and provide farmers and other industries with alternative income streams. We have committed to providing $250,000 for a Carbon Farming Advice pilot program, which will provide a rebate of up to $10,000 for farmers and businesses to seek expert carbon farming advice.

I am proud of our State’s achievements as we continue to take climate action across all sectors of our economy, including in housing, transport, waste, industry, energy and land use, and successfully transition to a low-emissions economy.
